Every great travel blog needs an intrepid explorer.
Mine is about 15 centimetres tall, bright yellow, and has absolutely no idea where he is. His name is Dingle.
Dingle is my pet rubber duck, travel companion, occasional photographic model, and — despite contributing nothing whatsoever to the cost of a trip — a surprisingly well-travelled little bird.
How it all began
At some point, Dingle went from being a rubber duck to being the rubber duck.
He started coming along on trips. Then he started appearing in photos. Before long, packing for an overseas adventure wasn’t complete until I’d performed the most important pre-departure check:
Passport? Check.
Phone? Check.
Dingle? Check.
And so began the travels of a small yellow duck with no passport, no luggage and an enviable ability to get through airport security without removing his shoes.
The world according to Dingle
Dingle has accompanied me on adventures around the world, where he has posed enthusiastically in front of landmarks, admired spectacular scenery and maintained a remarkably upbeat attitude through delayed flights, questionable weather and my occasional poor decision-making.
He is an excellent travelling companion.
He never complains about the hotel.
He doesn’t care where we eat.
He can fit comfortably in hand luggage.
And when something goes horribly wrong, he continues smiling with an expression that suggests this was all part of the plan.
His one significant weakness is navigation. Dingle couldn’t find his own arse with both wings. Fortunately, that’s my department. Well, not entirely fortunately…
Welcome to the adventures of Dingle.
